Yesterday we watched a Common Kestrel kill a Blue Jay. We didn’t see it capture the bird, but heard a fuss being made outside, and when we investigated, there was this Kestrel on the ground with the Blue Jay in its claws. The Blue Jay’s mate was squawking and dive bombing the Kestrel to no avail. The Kestrel eventually flew, with Blue Jay in tow, across the road from our house. We watched him plucking the Blue Jay’s feathers while the Blue Jay continued to struggle. Our presence with the camera ultimately caused the Kestrel to fly away, again with the Blue Jay in tow.

If you look closely, you can see the Kestrel and Blue Jay in the middle of this photo.
